Your knee joint is composed of three bones: the femur (thigh bone), the patella or kneecap, and tibia (shin bone). Your knee joint is the largest joint in your body. It is supported by ligaments, cartilages, and muscles. Movements that you can do with your knee are bending (flexion), straightening (extension), and minimal rotation.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain can be caused by several conditions and injuries. The condition can be caused by overuse or repetitive movements of the knee. In some cases, knee pain can be caused by a direct blow to your knee causing damage to the supporting knee structures. In others, knee pain is associated with an underlying joint problem, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or gout.

Knee injuries are common among people participating in sports. A blow to the knee can cause any structure of your knee to get damaged. But, any of the structures of your knee can be injured even without direct contact. Some of the more common knee injuries in sports are enumerated below.

Your knee pain can be accompanied by other symptoms depending on the cause. Some common symptoms associated with knee pain may include

  • Swelling
  • Muscle / joint stiffness
  • Difficulty moving your knee

Physical therapy can help you manage your knee pain and other associated symptoms. Your physical therapist will be able to help you decide on what appropriate treatments are best for you based on your specific problems and your goals.

Your physical therapist will employ a combination of PT treatments, such as cold therapy, heat therapy, elctrotherapeutic modalities (e.g. ultrasound), postural training, gait training, and assistive device use.

Home Remedies for Knee Pain

There are certain home remedies that you can do to manage your knee pain and other symptoms. In most minor cases of knee injuries, home remedies like rest, modifying your activities, ice massage or ice pack application and elevating your limb can help with your minor symptoms.

Should You Have Knee Surgery?

Knee surgery may be recommended by your doctor only if nonsurgical means, such as cold therapy, heat therapy, physical therapy, exercises, and pain medication do not help control your symptoms. Surgery may also be necessary if your knee is severely damaged.
