American Physical Therapy Association

The American Physical Therapy Association, or APTA, is the leading physical therapy organization in the United States, representing more than 77,000 members.

The Association started in the early 1900s, which first accepted women only and was known as the American Women's Physical Therapeutic Association. It later changed its name to the American Physiotherapy Association, accepting male physical therapists as members, as well.

In the late 1940s, the physical therapy organization changed its name to American Physical Therapy Association and has not changed to present.

The national headquarters of the APTA is located in Alexandria, Virginia.
